Angelo Vercesi started his new job as coach of the Croatian women’s national volleyball team on December 27, just one week before the qualifying tournament for the World Championship got underway in the coastal city of Rovinj. The Brazilian not only accomplished his mission to qualify the team for the World Championships in Italy, but made quite a statement in the process as Croatia beat the Netherlands 3:2 in the final match. The Dutch eventually qualified for the Women’s World Championship 2014 as one of the top second-placed teams, defeating Hungary (3:0) and France (3:1). "It is just fantastic! We scored a big victory in front of our fans and we qualified for the World Championship! I knew I had made the right decision when I accepted the proposal to coach the Croatian national team", said an enthusiastic Angelo Vercesi. While Vercesi can usually be found coaching a club in Baku, Azerbaijan the Croatian Volleyball Federation was able to tempt him into taking on a lucrative second job. “My expectations and hopes are fulfilled. This is one of the biggest successes for Croatian volleyball and a sign that Angelo Vercesi was the right choice,” said President of the Croatian Volleyball Federation, Zdeslav Barac. "If you ask me why I came to Croatia, my answer is definitely not the money. I am here to win gold at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. We are working hard for every victory, and are working hard to be the best!", added Vercesi.
