Brazil started the second week of the FIVB World Grand Prix with a 3:1 (20:25, 25:22, 25:12, 25:18) victory over the Dominican Republic in Group G on Friday. Gabriela Guimaraes of Brazil and Bethania De La Cruz of the Dominican Republic both scored 25 points. Brazilians Fernanda Rodrigues (20 points) and Fabiana Claudino (13) were the only other players to reach double figures in the match. The other stats were largely even: Both teams made 19 errors, both picked up six service points and Brazil edged the blocking total 9:8. The Dominicans made more spiking attempts than Brazil (160:153), but the Brazilians made theirs count (61:44). Brazil coach José Roberto Guimarães said: “We’ve had the same slow start in all four games in the World Grand Prix. That could be very dangerous for us; we lose the first set and then we get better. We have to lose that tendency; it’s not good for us.”
