Match Report

Hungary storming out in the beginning of the Qualifier in Pool E

Article

Hungary stormed out in the first match of Pool E in the #EuroVolleyW Qualifier, taking place in Le Phare, Belfort, France. The Hungarians, led by star player Gréta Szakmáry, needed only 66 minutes to seize a straight-sets victory over the team of Israel, coached by the legendary Logan Tom, who took up on coaching the team in the beginning of this month. Szakmáry and her teammates controlled the game during all the match, remaining focused in the decisive moments beginning their journey toward a much desired #EuroVolleyW ticket.

  • Both teams started good in the match, following each others in the result. Hungary, however, were able to get their chances in the right moments and strated building a comfortable lead of 4 points. With 44% efficiency in attack in this set, the players around head coach Jakub Gluszak, emerged victorious in the first set. Kata Törok was topping the charts, recording 5 points.
  • Inspired by their good performance, the Hungarian players entered the second set motivated to continue on showing their best. Pushing even harder on the attack (17 winning spikes), they made it difficult for Israel's defence. On the other hand, the players around Logan Tom were struggling with organising successful attacks and finished with 9 successful actions on this element in this set.
  • Hungary speeded up even more in the last set, and enjoying the game, started performing very good on the net (3 kill blocks) and on the serving line (2 aces).
  • The players of Gluszak finished the match with 51% efficiency on the winning spikes.
  • One of the key players in the Hungarian national team, Gréta Szakmáry showed once her power and scored 18 points. Agnes Pallag of her team contributed with 11 for the victory.
  • For Israel, Polina Malik finished with 12 points to her name.

Jakub Gluszak, head coach of Hungary: "We are really happy about the result because we were a little bit afraid. It is a first match in such a tournament, there are a lot of stressful situations. But I am glad that we showed that we were prepared, and worked good together off and on the court. Tomorrow is a next day, next opponent. It will be tough much against France, but we will try to rest, prepare the game and our tactics, and come back to the hall showing the same fighting spirit!"

Tali Hakas, libero of Israel: "We played as best as we could and I am proud of it. We did not have much time for training so I am satisfied with our game. We have young players and it is good for them to have these kind of experiences; this is the way they can grow in the game. For tomorrow, we need to prepare ourselves mentally, physically and then try to show our best on the court."

On Saturday, Hungary will play France, while Israel meet Denmark.
