Volleyball Uses Strong Defense in 3-0 Victory Over Tennessee Tech

NASHVILLE — Johanna Alcantara finished with 18 kills on the day while finishing with a hitting percentage of .452. to help the Tennessee State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles Thursday at Kean Hall. On defense, the Tigers were led by Gina Rivera-Ortiz who had 14 digs along with five blocks from Gabrielle Johnson and five rejections from Kennedy Davis to lead them defensively. It was the fifth straight home victory for TSU.

"Today was amazing, I felt the crowd's energy it made us more hyped," said Davis. It feels really nice (to give the victory). We talked about it in the locker room that wasn't going to come back without a win. We had to come out here and do what we had to do."

The victory breaks a three-game losing streak against Tech. 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Tigers persevered past a ferocious Tennessee Tech rally in the first set, holding on to win 25-23 after leading by nine points at 20-11 earlier in the set.

SET 2 | Tennessee State continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-16 victory in set number two. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. Tennessee State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to finish off the set. Tennessee State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Tennessee Tech attacks in the stanza.

SET 3 | Tennessee State then ended the match with a victory in set number three. The Lady Tigers the set three 25-22. Tennessee State took the lead for good at 10-9 in a set that showcased four lead changes before the Tigers took over the lead. Tennessee State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking five Tennessee Tech attacks in the stanza.
