Bartosz Kurek’s high-intensity game led to Poland’s 3:1 (26:28, 28:26, 25:19, 25:22) win over Russia in the first round of the World Cup on Wednesday. Kurek finished with 25 points. Dmitriy Muserskiy scored 20 points. Poland outscored Russia in attack 53-46, with Rafał Buszek, Mateusz Bienek and Michał Kubiak adding up to the world champions’ firepower. Poland coach Stephane Antiga said: "I’m very happy with this win in our first big game in this competition. We had a surprise tonight because coach Vladimir Alekno changed the configuration of his team and we were not fully prepared for this kind of opponent. It was a very tough game. I’m very happy about the character of my players. It’s a pity about our setter (Grzegorz Łomacz). I hope he will be able to play before the end of this competition."
