@Volleybox

How do you do #4? Getting a permalink to , say , Himeji's transfers?

This is the Club view url:

That the same one that is in the “Share” popup that you can copy but it doesn't show a filtered list. What am I missing?

@Volleybox  Take your time. I'm still working to figure out how best to use the page for my investigations

@PierreFoucault  It's still unknown to me how the league is handling the ‘forfeited’ matches. That is, does the ‘winning’ team get 3 points or not?

To complicate matters some of the matches were cancelled by government decree so who forfeited those? I will delete those.

But either way, I think I'll go with your advice and delete all the “not played” matches. It will only make the “Table” incorrect. I can still rank the teams properly (and turn off the Table)

This is super cool now that I figured out a way to make use of the “tournaments” filter and have also kind of figured out where the anchors are. I need one more ability on the filters front that is probably not possible

Basically I want to know these things (and now I mostly do):

  1. How many High School players entered the V.League in this season (19)
  2. How many University players entered the V.League in this season (63)
  3. Which schools provided the most players to V.League? (Higashi & NSSU)

The fine tuning I need is: to differentiate between V1 and V2, so for example how many University players went to V1 and how many to V2?  Is there something tricky I can do to find that?

One of the reasons I was (and still am to a degree) flummoxed by the “tournaments” popup is because some of these “funny tournaments” in Japan don't include all the clubs in their “League”.  I know that's weird. It's Japan. So there are some players who didn't compete in a HS or UNI Championship Tournament (because they got eliminated in a Block Round) who are showing up unaccounted for in the V.League. But it's only a few, I imagine. I'm close enough.

Is there a way to TAG a match as “forfeited”? To differentiate it from an actual “loss”?

Japan's V.League Division 2 is chopping off the 3rd round of the tournament and not rescheduling any 2nd Round matches that were ‘postponed’. And if it was a team's refusal to participate initially (not a league or government decision) they must go in the books as a forfeit. Or something like that.

Even more nuts is: What do I do with a match that was played but is being deleted by the League? It won't count towards the ranking. (It was the first match of the 3rd Round). I guess I just delete it as well ?

7.  Club view and player view results are not the same

Start Fresh
Choose Club View
Search “Himeji”
Select "All Japan Intercollegiate Championship 2020/21"
Nothing Found

or

Leave it on Player View
Search “Himeji”

Six results Found

Is that expected behavior? because of … something?

@Volleybox  I had always thought of wanting this when viewing a tournament's matches rather than a team's matches. When you start from a team's matches, like in your screenshot, it's a lot more sensible – to pick an opposing team from there rather than two teams from somewhere else in the site.

I'd like to see all seasons in the results. With most recent on top? Maybe the results list could have demarcations between seasons, in case someone is interested in just a certain season, to make finding it easier?

summing up the results and showing statistics

That would be a great addition.

Throw it on your giant list of things TODO ?

I don't get it. They are going to do the whole VNL round robin in one city?

I hope this is a test 3 years ago +1

@Volleybox  Tough call. I'd probably go with A because (I assume) most people who land there will be looking for the latest scores and they will be quicker easier to see (especially when there's a big pile).

I've always been curious how these piles are ordered. It seems alpha-numeric at times, but with an exception which always puts the “final” at the far right end. But then a “semifinal” button will be in the middle of the pile after “Group F” but before “7th place” match.

Is it possible to order them by date?

@PierreFoucault  Well … no. But I wanna be nice sometimes instead of my usual snarky self ? It's a tough job.

Maybe we should have a discussion about “piles”. For example, I chose to Define the Rounds for Chinese League 2020-21 differently from how they were for 2019-20 precisely because of the out of control pile factor (others may disagree with my choices).

19/20 Big-ass pile

20/21 Little-ass pile (with a lot more matches)

You can't see the piles now but check the scrollbars. Size matters

@PierreFoucault Yeah, to be fair to our beloved Captain, though, he has to juggle the interface for folks who are here just looking around with the needs of folks who work here.

“piles”

LOL

@PierreFoucault  I used to be one of those “Apple fanboys” (everyone hates) until Jony Ive took over design at Apple. He took the “U” out of UI and UX and replaced it with “How does it look in my Powerpoint presentation”?  He destroyed modern design with his hide-and-seek bullshit (pardon my French ? )

Not to mention one of my biggest pet peeves: hiding the scrollbar until you hover over it to see if there's a scrollbar.

I hope this is a test 3 years ago +1

Yikes!

De-cluttering is not kind to visual learners like me ?

BUT - some of the Rounds Definitions in some tournaments are out of control.

@Volleybox Tough nut to crack. I second @pedeshtrian 's collapsible suggestion. Can you do something similar for “Best Players” section? A collapsible section with their names included?

One small aesthetic nit pick that may be unsolvable is that when a team has many podiums, and the list line wraps, it looks kinda sloppy because the line height changes and the wrapped line doesn't justify like the ‘bulleted list’ I expect it to be:

As in:

Thank you for taking up the issue

Sounds good

@Volleybox  Bermin's law:

If you have seven people standing on a stage each holding a piece of fruit and ask someone in the audience to rank the pieces of fruit by their size, it's easy to do because they can see them side by side.

If you walk the fruit holders onstage one at a time, and show a picture of something else and recite a poem in between each fruit holder entrance, the audience member has to work hard, or take notes, in order to rank the fruit sizes

I really miss the Tournaments TAB. I want to be able to see at a glance how a team has done over the past several years. Is there a way to see this that I'm missing? Scrolling the Rosters page is not an acceptable way to do it.

@Sherlock  I think I can understand this change from the perspective of a One-Stop-Shop for all your singular team needs. It lets you see all the stuff a certain roster was involved with for that season in one place – at the expense of other things, but I imagine that is the thinking that went into it.

I don't think it means we need to eliminate the Tournaments TAB, though. And maybe some of the stuff piling up above the actual rosters we come looking for could be collapsible? As mentioned, I'm not a fan of the “Best Players” hogging up space--move it to the side or put it below the roster, or make it collapsible? Or put their names there as well.

And the “Won Tournaments” is kind of silly without details. It's a row of icons that tell you nothing (except that there's either a bunch of them there or none, which tells you something).

I understand that modern design experts are afraid or text, but putting small pics that tell you nothing in a row might be modern but it is not helpful.

@Sherlock  I know about the 3:00 alarm bell. Slowness and bouncing volleybox logos happen all the time for me. USA west coast, I guess.
