Volleyball is a popular sport in Indonesia, with a rich history and rapidly evolving competitions. The sport was first introduced in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period around 1928, where physical education teachers introduced it in secondary schools of the Dutch East Indies1.

After Indonesia’s independence, volleyball became increasingly popular and was officially included as a sport in the National Sports Week in 1951 in Jakarta. The All-Indonesia Volleyball Association (PBVSI) was established on January 22, 1955, and was recognized by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in the same year1.

Before the 1990s, PBVSI held national volleyball championships among clubs known as the Main Volleyball League (Livotama) and the Inter-Work Volleyball League (Livokarya). However, these competitions were the forerunners of the Indonesian Volleyball League (Livoli), which was first held in 19991.

The Proliga, Indonesia’s professional volleyball league, was first held in 2002. The competition is divided into men’s and women’s categories, with clubs from all over Indonesia participating. Proliga has become a prestigious event showcasing the best talents in Indonesian volleyball2.

From its beginnings as a simple game in schools, volleyball in Indonesia has developed into a professional sport with competitions that attract talented athletes and have a wide fan base across the country.
